We, the friars of the Dominican Province of Saint Joseph, having examined our mission and our resources, have embarked on a renewal of our Dominican life. We have planned our future ministry of preaching. You are very much a part of our present and our future. As we approach our bicentennial, we seek new means to support our mission as handed down from Saint Dominic himself nearly eight centuries ago. When Father Fenwick and his companions established a new foundation of our Order, they relied on God's grace and guidance, and the generosity of the people. Our anniversary offers a unique invitation and opportunity for those who have been touched collectively and individually by the Order of Preachers in the Province of Saint Joseph. Through the campaign, you, our friends, are invited to join our 200 year old tradition in the United States of spreading the Word of God. Won't you "Come Preach With Us"? |

C. Graduate Studies and
Continuing Formation of the Friars
Graduate study is also a key to our excellence in preaching, teaching, writing and research. Presently more than 60% of our friars hold graduate degrees. We also offer periodic opportunities to participate in programs of continuing formation, which provide special occasions for reflection, renewal, and personal growth. This enriching experience is an investment in our future and will further benefit the people we serve.

D. The Provincial Archives
We have a rich history to share with others. Our archives are not only a tribute to our past and a legacy to our future, they are also a rich resource for educational and historical research. These records must be adequately organized and preserved in an appropriate site in order to be made available well into the future.

E. Outreach Programs for the Laity
Education for us also includes outreach programs for the laity. Presently we minister to 15 parishes and 3 campuses. Each has unique and diverse programs tailored to the needs of the individual congregations and communities it serves. Our programs include a soup kitchen at Sacred Heart in Jersey City, NJ; an Hispanic ministry at Saint Dominic in Washington, DC; and meals for new moms and others in distress at our University of Virginia campus ministry.
In particular, our retreat center at Saint Stephen in Dover, MA, affords multiple opportunities to provide the laity with many types of spiritual development programs. The center, which can serve even more given the proper setting and circumstances, has several physical drawbacks that limit its use by the laity. Funding will create an even more welcoming environment and alleviate some participants' very real concerns. For example, climbing stairs can be very difficult, if not impossible, for an elderly guest suffering from crippling arthritis. A new elevator will eliminate this barrier and ease traveling the four stories from individuals' rooms to the chapel, meeting and dining rooms. Other aging properties owned by our Province will have to be renovated in the very near future.

Members of our Province, like the population of the United States, are aging. While still active in their ministries, more than 100 friars are past age 70. As a community, God has granted us good health, ever-lengthening our ability to preach and serve.
Yet in any given year, there are approximately 14 friars in long-term skilled nursing care or assisted living facilities. These numbers will remain constant well into the first quarter of the Province's third century.
With continuing general inflation, we anticipate that health care costs will continue to increase. We also believe that our elderly are a living treasure, ministering and preaching through prayer and example. At this juncture in their lives, they merit the same care, compassion and service that they have given to so many others throughout their lifetimes.

In 1992, we were invited to establish a new mission in Eastern Africa. Presently, the Province is assisting and participating in the Church's tremendous growth through the formation of young African Dominican friars, and through teaching and preaching in seminaries and parishes. The Archbishop of Nairobi now requests that we assume additional responsibilities, centered on our charism of preaching: 1) undertake parochial ministry at the King'eero outstation, 2) institute a campus ministry at the University of Nairobi's School of Commerce in the nearby Spring Valley area, and 3) establish a new parish near the university. In general, the work must be done, literally, from the ground up. For example, while there is a church in King'eero and the shell of a rectory, as yet there is no running water, electricity, or service from municipal utilities. |

Today, new technologies such as the internet, cable and direct TV demand new forms of preaching. Exploring these and other new concepts will be bounded only by the limits of the Province's creativity and resources as technologies and media seemingly evolve and grow overnight.
Meanwhile, the traditional spoken and written methods of preaching, whether in parishes, campus ministries or on streets of a city, must be maintained and enhanced. The challenges are many, the opportunities limitless.
