The Relevance of St. Pius X
Leo XIII made the Church credible in the eyes of the world. He showed mastery in international diplomacy, and was respected-even admired-by liberal rulers around the world. But at the end of his long pontificate, it was felt by many that the Church needed a more spiritual focus... above all, led by the example and preaching of the pope himself. There was desire for an evangelical pope, a pope who…  » More

A Triumph of Grace
Martha and Mary as depicted by Bl. Fra Angelico in his "Agony in the Garden"
St. Martha is a saint for our times. She is a saint for those who easily get anxious and worried and distracted... for those of us who easily get preoccupied with work, and duties, and our families. She is a saint for people who are busy. She is a saint for us.

Interestingly, we meet St. Martha at three points in the Gospel. And in these three points, we see a development. The first time is in Galilee,…  » More

Homily for the Wednesday of the Third Week of Easter
April 21, 2010

During the Easter Season, we hear Jesus say, "I am the bread of life" (Jn 6:35). Now that He has conquered death, we are invited to cherish more deeply the banquet of life. For some…  » More

The Riches of a Dominican Holy Week: Easter Sunday
Friars chanting the Invitatory Antiphon on Easter Sunday.

"The Lord is risen, alleluia!"

There are so many things that are beautiful about being a religious during the Paschal Triduum.  The changes in the life during this time - holy water fonts are emptied, common devotional practices are done in private, the Divine Office as it is stripped down to its bare essentials - show forth just how important these elements are to the life.  Yet, when these things…  » More

"Something strange is happening - there is a great silence on earth today, a great silence and stillness.  The whole earth keeps silence because the King is asleep.  The earth trembled and is still because God has fallen asleep in the flesh and He has raised up all who have slept ever since the world began.  God has died in the flesh and hell trembles with fear." - From an ancient homily on Holy…  » More

Fr. Bruno Mary Shah, O.P. preached the Mass for Monday of Holy Week at the Dominican House of Studies in Washington.  Below is the full text of his homily.

When a man turns to the Lord, the veil of darkness is removed (2 Cor 3.16). And it is the liturgy of these holy days, the action of the Church, of Christ's body, that turns us toward the Lord. We shall gaze on the glory of the Lord, being transformed…  » More

The Fire that Doesn’t Harm
Moses and the Burning Bush

On Wednesday, March 24, Rev. Br. Hyacinth Marie Cordell, O.P. preached a homily on the fire of God, which he noted doesn't burn but rather perfects man.  Here is the full text of his reflection:

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego reject idolatry. They are willing to die for the covenant. So, King Nebuchadnezzar has them cast into the fire. But, we read, "the fire did not touch them at all, or…  » More

On Tuesday, March 23, Rev. Br. Austin Dominic Litke, O.P. preached a homily on the connections linking the cross of Christ, faith, and the evangelical counsels.  Here is the text:

With the 5th Week of Lent, we have entered this final stage of our liturgical preparations for Easter, traditionally called Passiontide. During this time, we turn less and less to ourselves and our acts of penance-our…  » More

Tenebrae

On Wednesday, March 31, at 7:30 PM, come to the Dominican House of Studies and join the Friars in this traditional monastic Holy Week liturgy commemorating the death and burial of the Light of lights.  Composed of music, word, and light, the liturgy is punctuated by the haunting melodies of the Lamentations of Jeremiah as sung by Jesus Christ weeping over the lost children of Jerusalem.
