Appearing on PBS' "Religion & Ethics Newsweekly" the weekend of November 21-22, Fr. Thomas Joseph White, O.P., a Professor of Theology at the Dominican House of Studies, praised Flannery O'Connor's depiction of "surprising events where people encounter the grace of God" as being in line with the author's Thomist vision of the world. Fr. White, who worked closely with the producers of the segment, credits her with first impressing upon him the significance of St. Thomas Aquinas.
In an extended interview that appears on the show's website, Fr. White says that O'Connor had a "deep intuitive sense of the truth in Catholic faith," and appreciated Church dogma "not as something anti-intellectual or hampering the development of the human person, but opening up to the mystery God."
