The Catholic Virginian, the newspaper of the Diocese of Richmond, recently wrote an article about the plans for a new Dominican priory to be built next to St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Charlottesville.

St. Thomas Aquinas Parish began in 1943 as a Newman Center established to serve the Catholic presence at the University of Virginia. In 1959, the Newman Center was entrusted to the Dominican Friars of the Province of St. Joseph. The Catholic population of the university reached 13 percent by the early 1960's.

In 1962, the Dominicans purchased land and plans were developed for a church and student center on the current site of the parish. Bishop John Russell established St. Thomas Aquinas Parish the next year. This new parish, unique in the diocese, was to serve the university's Catholic students, faculty, administration and their families.  At the time, the Friars also began to serve as chaplains at University Hospital. During the last 30 years, the number of Catholic students and faculty at the University has continued to grow. By 1990, it was necessary to construct a new church to serve the expanding population of the parish. The new church was dedicated in November 1995. The new Parish Center was started in 2002 and was completed in the Spring of 2004.
