Blackfriars Repertory Theatre staged a new play by award-winning California playwright Harry Cornelius Cronin entitled "In Charge of the Fire" at The Little Theatre in New Haven, Connecticut in January. Cynthia Wolfe Boynton reports in today's New York Times that, "like the ancient Dominican friars who traveled from village to village to preach the word of God, the Rev. Peter John Cameron plans to take the Blackfriars Repertory Theater troupe and their play about Saint Paul on the road." "In Charge of the Fire" (the title is a reference to the biblical verse Revelation 14:18) deals with the life of the Apostle Paul of Tarsus at the time of his imprisonment in Rome. The play was produced by Blackfriars in commemoration of the Jubilee Year to the Apostle Paul observed by the Roman Catholic Church from June 2008 to June 2009.

“A friar is a portable monk, and the theater is a portable art,” said Father Cameron. “The theater is also a wonderful place to take part in other people’s stories and explore big questions like ‘What do I believe?’ in a very safe, intimate setting. It’s an escape from the busyness of everyday life.” Last spring Blackfriars produced the premiere of Cronin’s play "Dante’s Hope" in New York City. The play was directed by Fr. Peter John Cameron, O.P., the artistic director of Blackfriars. Read the New York Times Article

**Correction: Unfortunately, a few errors slipped into the Times’ story on the Blackfriars Repertory Theatre. The longest running continuously operated off-Broadway troupe was the original Blackfriars Repertory Theatre (1940-1972). Fr. Cameron’s new Blackfriars troupe is now 10-years old and it does not have permanent home.
