Last Thursday, Father Aquinas Guilbeau and I had the opportunity of sitting in on the final taping of Cardinal Edward M. Egan's weekly radio program, "A Conversation with the Cardinal," broadcast on Sirius XM's The Catholic Channel. In contrast to its recent reporting on the cardinal, The New York Times did a decent job covering the event (see the link below).
Cardinal Egan took the opportunity of his final show to reminisce with other Catholic Channel hosts about the station's creation and its early days on the air. He also took a few moments to respond to some of the less flattering rumors printed about him recently. As Paul Vitello reports: "In jocular, yet pointed remarks, he said that he would not, in fact, retire to a penthouse apartment in Paris; that he did not play Mozart sonatas for friends on the baby grand at his residence behind St. Patrick's Cathedral; that he does not dine frequently at 'Upper East Side gourmet eateries'; and that he was not against continuing the rule of celibacy for priests."
Cardinal Egan's final broadcast also fell on his 77th birthday. At the show's conclusion, The Catholic Channel staff presented him a cake and sang "Happy Birthday."

Running through April 4, the play, not seen in New York since 1922, is a co-production of the Storm Theatre and the… » More
