Dominican Missal Digitized

Gonzaga University has just added to its online rare book collection a digitized sample from the unique Dominican Missal of 1521. The volume is one of the treasures of "The Gonzaga Collection: Rare Books from the Jesuit Heritage," housed in the climate-controlled vault in Gonzaga University’s Foley Library Center. Over 75% of this collection now has detailed bibliographic records on WorldCat, and when the whole of the collection is thus accessible bibliographically the plan is to digitize it.

The new webpages demonstrate the usefulness of this plan by providing a generous sample of the Dominican Missal of 1521, with indications of ways it can be used for research and curricular enhancement. The main page on this missal presents all the digitized images, in both thumbnails and access to PDFs, with discussion of them. Linked pages treat deluxe illustration in this missal, women in the Dominican Missal, and use of it for the study of Latin. This elegant and profusely illustrated volume has a marbled slipcase, cover, and endpapers and, on the first one hundred pages, over 260 woodcuts.
