Fr. Pius Pietrzyk, OP was raised in Phoenix, AZ where he attended Brophy College Preparatory. He graduated from the University of Arizona with a double major in English and Philosophy. From there, he went to law school at the University of Chicago, where he obtained his Juris Doctor. Upon graduation, he worked for three years in the Corporate and Securities practice of Sidley & Austin, a large international law firm based in Chicago. Upon reflection and discernment, he left the practice of law to enter religious life. He entered the novitiate for the Dominican Province of St. Joseph in 2002, where he took the religious name "Pius", after Pope St. Pius V, one of the four Popes who were first Dominicans. As part of his initial formation, Fr. Pius studied for the License in Sacred Theology. His thesis was on St. Thomas Aquinas's account of Knowledge and Love in understanding the persons of the Trinity. Fr. Pius was ordained to the priesthood on May 23, 2008 and served at the parish of St. Thomas Aquinas in Zanesville, OH. In 2010, Fr. Pius was appointed by President Barack Obama to be a member of the Board of Directors of the Legal Services Corporation, an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation that promotes equal access to justice and provides grants for high-quality civil legal assistance to low-income Americans. Fr. Pius is currently in studies pursuing a degree in Canon Law at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (the Angelicum).

As the announcement of Fr. DiNoia's new appointment makes its way through the Church in America, members of the episcopacy have begun to express both personal joy and gratitude for this great honor given to an American priest.
His Eminence Francis Cardinal George, the President of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, issued the following statement in praise of the appointment:
The naming of Father J. Augustine DiNoia, O.P. as Secretary at the Vatican's Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments is a matter of pride for both the Church in the United States and the Dominican Order.
Father DiNoia worked in the Secretariat for Doctrine at the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops before going to Rome to work at the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. He always showed himself a fine scholar dedicated to the pursuit of Truth and a generous co-worker available to friends and colleagues.
The bishops of the United States are grateful that Archbishop-elect DiNoia will bring his talents to the Vatican office responsible for the liturgy and sacraments throughout the entire world.
A recent article by The Catholic Spirit, a publication of the Archdiocese of St. Paul-Minneapolis, reports on the reaction of Bishop Arthur Serratelli of Paterson, NJ. Bishop Serratelli is the current chairman of the US Bishops' Committee on Divine Worship. The article states that Bishop Serratelli welcomed the appointment and explained that the new secretary's experience serving the Church both in the US and at the Vatican "more than adequately prepares him" for his new position. Serratelli added, "His experience also will help in the months ahead as the Church prepares to implement the third edition of the Roman Missal."
