At separate ceremonies on November 7 and 14, a total of five Friars of the Province of St. Joseph made their solemn profession--"until death"--in the Order of Preachers. On November 14, Brothers Ezra Sullivan, O.P., Dominic Bump, O.P., and Austin Dominic Litke, O.P., professed their final vows in the chapel of the Priory of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C., and Fathers Gabriel Gillen, O.P., and Aquinas Guilbeau, O.P., professed theirs on November 7 at the Church of St. Vincent Ferrer in New York City.
Reflecting at the time of his profession, Br. Austin explained that final vows in the Order do not require that Dominican friars shed their bonds to "the world" completely, something about which parents, siblings and friends sometimes worry. "Though they are attenuated, natural family links don't break down," said Brother Austin, "as grace does not destroy but builds on nature." As a result, he continued to explain, family relations can become deepened by vows as they are taken up and placed at service of the entire spiritual family of the Church.
Congratulations to our new solemnly professed brothers! May the Lord prosper your Dominican lives!
