On Saturday, a beloved priest of the Province completed his earthly pilgrimage and went home quietly to the Lord. At the age of 92, Fr. Charles Albert Farrell, O.P., died at Mohun Health Care Center in Columbus, OH. A one-time Student Master and a Prior of multiple communities, Fr. Charlie, as he was called, earned the love and respect of several generations of friars, including the most recent classes of novices at St. Gertrude's Priory in Cincinnati.
Below you find Fr. Charlie's obituary published in the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord.
The Rev. Albert Farrell was quick to earn respect
MADEIRA - Wherever he lived, the Rev. Charles Albert Farrell quickly earned the friendship and respect of his fellow Dominican friars and the parishioners he served.
"He was a very patient man and hardly ever got angry," said the Rev. Clement Burns, who was in Rev. Farrell's class when they studied for the priesthood and remained a close friend throughout their lives.
Rev. Farrell, 92, died of pneumonia on Saturday at the Mohun Health Care Center of the Dominican Sisters of Peace in Columbus.
As a testament to his popularity, Rev. Farrell was elected to serve as the superior at many of the Dominican priories he lived in. Rev. Burns had a ready explanation for this.
"He was kind. He never yelled at you," he said with a laugh.
Rev. Farrell grew up in Providence, R.I.. In 1946, he entered the Dominican novitiate of the Province of St. Joseph at St. Rose Priory, Springfield, Ky., and he was ordained a priest eight years later.
For most of his life, Rev. Farrell served as a parish priest and helped train young Dominican friars. He was based in various cities, including Washington, D.C., and Columbus.
In 2001, Rev. Farrell came to the St. Gertrude Priory in Madeira. Because of declining health, he moved in October to Mohun Health Care Center in Columbus.
"He was certainly a very dedicated priest," said the Rev. Pierre Darren, pastor and prior at St. Gertrude. "He was always an amazingly cheerful and friendly person."
Rev. Farrell is survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. One of his brothers also was a Dominican priest, and one of his sisters was a Dominican nun.
The Dominican community will pray the Office of the Dead at 5 p.m. Wednesday at St. Gertrude Church, 7630 Shawnee Run Road, Madeira. That will be followed by a public wake service from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.
The funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Gertrude Church. He will be buried in the Dominican plot at St. Joseph Cemetery in Somerset. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Egan-Ryan Funeral Home in Columbus.
