Friar Confirmed to Legal Services Board

Shortly before midnight on September 29, 2010, the United States Senate unanimously confirmed Fr. Pius Pietrzyk, O.P., a Friar of the Province of St. Joseph, as a member of the Board of Directors of the Legal Services Corporation (LSC).  Fr. Pius was nominated to the LSC Board by President Barack Obama on July 28, 2010 on the recommendation of Sen. Mitch McConnell, the Monority Leader in the Senate.  Fr. Pius will serve as one of 11 members of the Board with oversight over the LSC.

The LSC was established in 1974 and operates as an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation that promotes equal access to justice and provides grants for high-quality civil legal assistance to low-income Americans.  It is the single largest provider of civil legal aid for the poor in the nation. In the current Fiscal Year, the LSC distributed approximately $420 million in funds to legal aid offices around the country.  The Corporation is headed by a bipartisan board of directors whose 11 members are appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate.
