Fr. Bruno M. Shah, O.P.

Fr. Shah was clothed in the Dominican habit in 2003 and ordained to the priesthood in 2009. His earlier studies were in religion, philosophy, and education. He is an adult convert. Before entering the Order, he worked for a high school run by the (French) Christian Brothers on the Lower East-Side, NY, NY; he taught in the Literature and Religion departments for three years. It was during this time that he discerned his call to an active, priestly ministry, focused on doctrinal preaching, and necessarily flowing from contemplative study and communal religious observance.

Hospital Ministry and Policy

Rooted in sound principles and concrete experience, Fr. Saliga presents a thought provoking anecdote about the overlap between pastoral sensitivity and clinical policy. It leads him to judge, "multi-disciplinary cooperation is prudent in order to enhance the safety and efficacy of the holistic care of the patients involved. At the same time, our contemporary healthcare system in the United States exists with a heavy dose of litigious pressure. As members of the healthcare team, we ministers must practice in accord with reasonable and legally-recognized policies and procedures which exist for the protection of vulnerable patients, clinicians, and visitors alike. If we do not, the parish and/or diocese in whose name we operate might be held liable."

Toward educating his readers, Fr. Saliga offers 7 basic guidelines for good and prudent hospital ministry, which can be found in the rest of his article, Hospital Policies: A Help in Providing Excellent Pastoral Care of the Sick.
