Is Latin a Dead Language?

Not for a Recent Harvard Graduate . . . and Future Dominican Sister

Over at First Things, the Anchoress shares the story of Mary Anne Marks, a graduate of Harvard University's Class of 2010.  At last month's commencement exercises, Mary Anne delivered a six-minute address---get this---in Latin, complete with classical pronunciation.  She beat out other applicant's to fulfill this long-held tradition at America's oldest university.  Click above for video of the address, and here for the Latin text.

What makes Mary Anne's story even more interesting is that later this summer she will become a postulant for the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, in Ann Arbor, MI.

During this vocation season, as men and women across the country prepare to enter seminary or religious life, please pray for Mary Anne and the other young women who will join her in formation.  And while at prayer, don't forget the 21 young men who will enter the novitiate for the Province of St. Joseph in August.
