P.C. Marches for Life

More than 100 students from Providence College took part in the national March for Life in Washington, D.C. on Monday and found a gracious welcome at St. Dominic Priory. "I was overwhelmed by the number of students who wanted to endure the grueling trip in order to give witness to the immense value of human life," said Fr. James Cuddy, O.P., College Chaplain. "We found ourselves with the enviable problem of trying to figure out what we were going to do with so many zealous and dedicated students."

The Dominican community of St. Dominic's in Washington generously came to the aid of Providence College and provided accommodations for the entire group. Both the Prior and the Pastor of the community provided places for the students to sleep and breakfast for the weary pilgrims. "Our group could not be more grateful to Frs. Fox and Salomone, as well as to all of our Dominican brothers, for opening up their doors to and providing such a gracious welcome. Without their generosity, we simply could not have brought as many students as we did," said Cuddy.

Every inch of the parish center, the laundry room, and priory conference room was filled by weary students in sleeping bags on the evening before the March. After being awoken by Fr. Cuddy lovingly flipping the lights on and off, and fortified by cups of strong coffee, the PC group attended the parish Mass at 8:00am and was treated to a fine homily by Fr. Gerry Lessard, O.P. After that, they were off and running for the day. "The location of St. Dominic's was ideal for us," said Cuddy. "It allowed our students to be right next to the National Mall and to experience all of the activities that led up to the March."

Students also had a chance to meet members of the St. Dominic's community, many of whom have served at Providence College throughout the course of their lives in the Order. "It was a moving experience for our kids to meet the brethren and to feel their support for what they were doing. The old and the young were all brought together, bound not only by their dedication to the defense of human life, but also their connection to the Dominican Order and its mission," said Cuddy.
