Fr. Pius Pietrzyk, O.P.

Fr. Pius Pietrzyk, OP was raised in Phoenix, AZ where he attended Brophy College Preparatory. He graduated from the University of Arizona with a double major in English and Philosophy. From there, he went to law school at the University of Chicago, where he obtained his Juris Doctor. As part of his initial formation, Fr. Pius studied for the License in Sacred Theology. His thesis was on St. Thomas Aquinas's account of Knowledge and Love in understanding the persons of the Trinity. Fr. Pius was ordained to the priesthood on May 23, 2008 and served at the parish of St. Thomas Aquinas in Zanesville, OH. In 2010, Fr. Pius was appointed by President Barack Obama to be a member of the Board of Directors of the Legal Services Corporation, an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation that promotes equal access to justice and provides grants for high-quality civil legal assistance to low-income Americans. Fr. Pius is currently in studies pursuing a degree in Canon Law at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (the Angelicum).

On the evening of Tuesday, August 31, Dominicans from around the world began to assemble in Rome for the 290th General Chapter of the Order of Preachers.  Below is a video made by Dominicans of the English Province chronicling the opening of the Chapter.

Among the duties of the General Chapter is to elect a new Master of the Order, who will hold office for the next nine years.  According to our Constitutions, "The Master of the Order, since he is the successor of St. Dominic and the principle of the Order's unity, is the proper and immediate prelate of all the brethren, convents, and provinces, in virtue of the profession of obedience made to him by every member."

The Ritual for the Order directs that the friars pray continually for the Chapter and the brothers participating:  "In the year in which a general or provincial chapter is to be held, from its beginning, and right throughout the year, special prayers should be offered everywhere in the Order or province, at appropriate times and in whatever way seems most expedient."

Please join with Dominicans world-wide as we pray for the Capitulars in Chapter, especially for the guidance of the Holy Spirit as they elect a new Master. May our brothers at the Chapter, venerating Mary as Queen of Apostles and Mother of Mercy, carefully and really fulfill the duty committed to them as a service to the Church and all the brethren.
