Fr. Nicanor Pier Giorgio Austriaco, O.P., an Assistant Professor of Biology at Providence College, will present a paper next week at the University of Notre Dame Law School as part of the Summer Workshop on the Ethical, Philosophical, Legal & Theological Dimensions of Adult & Alternative Stem Cell Research. Joining many prominent philosophers, theologians, scientists, and other scholars, Fr. Nicanor will offer a paper titled "Systems Hylomorphism: A Post-Genomic Theory of Nature."
The abstract for his presentation is as follows: "Every ethical argument for or against the use of pluripotent stem cells in scientific research presupposes a theory of nature that answers the question: What is this cell and how is it different from that cell? As a growing number of contemporary philosophers have acknowledged, a coherent and compelling philosophical solution to the challenge of describing the nature of cells and other living beings already exists in the hylomorphic theory of Aristotle and St. Thomas Aquinas. Thus, in constructing a scientifically informed theory of nature, the approach I will use during my presentation will be to weave together the basic principles of Aristotelian-Thomistic hylomorphism and the insights of the systems perspective that is grounded in the emerging science of systems biology. Finally, I will use the systems perspective and key principles articulated by St. Thomas Aquinas in his theory of nature to identify criteria that could be used to distinguish cells from organisms."
In the video above, Fr. Jordan Kelly, O.P., speaks with young adults from New York City about the proper balance between technological tools of social networking and actual personal interaction. Fr. Kelly emphasizes that although the Church rightly uses technology in her efforts at evangelization, it is always necessary to go beyond technology itself… » More

Yeast cells are ideal stand-ins, Father Nicanor explains, because they behave remarkably like human cells. Plus, they reproduce, mature and age in a matter of days rather than years-a… » More
