Inspired by the World Youth Days of the late Pope John Paul II, the Lay Dominican Community of St. Martin de Porres in New Hope, KY, felt compelled to contribute both their talents and the Dominican charism to the "new evangelization." Therefore, in 2005, they hosted their first "Ignite Your Torch" Conference (IYT) for the Catholic youth of the region. Last June, anchored around the Feast of Corpus Christi, the fifth annual IYT Conference drew more than 300 young people from 15 US states as well as Mexico.
Held this year at St. Catharine College in Springfield, KY, the conference featured adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, devout celebrations of Holy Mass, a Eucharistic procession, catechesis, presentations on pro-life issues, and vibrant Catholic fellowship. A number of priests and brothers from the Province of St. Joseph were on hand all weekend to give talks, preach, and provide spiritual counseling.
Please visit the "Ignite Your Torch" homepage for video and photographs of the event. The conference is also featured on YouTube and Facebook.
In 2008, IYT organizers also launched a one-day event called "Live Differently," featuring the wit and spiritual wisdom of Sr. Jane Dominic Laurel, O.P., of the Nashville Dominicans. The Church of St. Louis Bertrand in Louisville, KY, hosted one of these events earlier this month.
