In an engaging talk on the true nature of happiness---and using a refrigerator magnet, a McDonald's slogan, and a popular Broadway tune as props---Br. Justin Brophy, O.P. refuted popular misconceptions of the subject as part of this summer's St. Thomas Aquinas Lecture Series hosted by St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Zanesville, OH.
Over the course of his lecture, Br. Justin explained that happiness "is something inside us, and cannot be found in anything outside ourselves." As a result, seeking it in money, power, sex, and other external pleasures and indulgences remains futile. In truth, happiness is found when "all our desires are fulfilled completely and perfectly." Achieving this ultimate goal hinges on the attainment of "our supernatural end," which is the "vision of God and seeing Him as He is." This vision is enjoyed, Br. Justin explained, at the conclusion of a life lived in virtue to the best of one's ability, aided of course by grace.
