May the grace and peace of God be with you. I hope this finds you well in these early days of summer.
When we think of July what comes readily to mind is July 4th, the short-hand name for the civil holiday known formally as Independence Day. On this day we celebrate our independence as a nation, the fact that we can govern ourselves freely and independently as a people, free from the heavy yoke of being subject to the rule of another nation. This liberty, proclaimed by the ringing of the great Liberty Bell at the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence, was won for our nation through the selfless sacrifice of those willing to shed their blood on the battlefield, paying the ultimate price, to try to secure this high ideal.
On the liturgical calendar, July is the month devoted to recalling the Precious Blood of Our Lord whose innocent Blood was shed in expiation for our sins to set us free from the power and enslaving yoke of sin in our lives. This great gift of freedom, won for us on the Cross, is the freedom of the children of God. It is an interior freedom that is life-giving. We are set free so that we might choose the Good, that we may live the abundant life that He promises us. This freedom is more than a high ideal - it is that supernatural freedom that brings true peace, that peace that the world longs for, but that only He can give.
On behalf of all the Friars of the Province of St. Joseph, I write to thank you for your own generous self sacrifice and support of our mission of preaching Christ Crucified. It is through His Holy Priesthood that Our Lord continues His work of salvation manifesting His saving grace through the sacraments. Our Lord's Blood shed on the Cross is the same Blood of which we partake in the Eucharist and the "Saving Cup". It is thanks to you, that we are able to press on on the battlefield of Truth, continuing Our Lord's work of proclaiming liberty to the captive. Through your unfailing support and sacrificial giving, you are our great and vital partner in this work that will bring true freedom and peace -- and healing -- into our world so wounded by sin and division.
Let us recommit our own lives in service to the Church for the good of the world. And allow me to express once again, on behalf of all the Friars, our profound gratitude to you.
Please keep us in your prayers and know that you have a daily remembrance in ours.
May God bless you and those dear to you.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Fr. D. Dominic Izzo, O.P.
