Paul Claudel’s “The Satin Slipper”

Blackfriars Repertory Theatre has teamed with The Storm Theatre to present "The Paul Claudel Project," an initiative designed to introduce the New York theater audience to the remarkable work of the late French playwrite.  Peter Dobbins, the artistic director of The Storm Theatre, explains the project's goal: "The Paul Claudel Project is an introduction to the work of one of the 20th century's greatest geniuses. In the three plays that we will present, Claudel explores the natures, differences and interactions of human and divine love, and how the resulting conflicts serve a greater plan. These three plays each tell stories of divine grace and adulterous passion in completely different styles and settings."

The first play of the series, "The Tidings Brought to Mary," was produced last spring.  The second play, "The Satin Slipper," is currently being performed at the Church of Notre Dame in New York City (405 West 114th Street).  Notre Dame houses the Catholic chaplaincy for Columbia University and is administered by Dominican Friars of the Polish Province.

Martin Denton of The New York Theatre Review has recently written favorably of the Blackfriars and Storm Theatre production of "The Satin Slipper."  In his review, Denton says: "In introducing us to an authentic lost masterwork of the last century, and in its ultimate, stark message of redemption through pure and unconditional love, The Satin Slipper is absolutely worth your time."

Blackfriars Repertory Theatre is an apostolate of the Dominican Friars of the Province of Saint Joseph.  It was founded in 1998 by Fr. Peter John Cameron, O.P., as a revival of Blackfriars Theatre (1940-1972), which was the first professional religious theatre ever tried in New York City and the oldest continuous Off-Broadway theatre in American stage history.
