In 1992, the Province of St. Joseph officially established the Vicariate of East Africa so that, with the assistance of the other American Dominican Provinces, the preaching mission of the Order of Preachers might be established in eastern Africa.  The Dominican Vicariate of East Africa comprises Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and southern Sudan. Watch the slideshow above in which the new novices are vested with the habit of our Holy Father, St. Dominic. In addition, you can see pictures of the student friars from Nairobi renew their simple vows and the outgoing novices make their first simple profession of vows. The novitiate for the Vicariate is located in St. Martin de Porres Priory, from which the friars also carry out a variety of other apostolic works. Next door to the Priory, the Hawthorne Dominican Sisters operate the St. Catherine Home, which is a hospice for those dying of cancer. Also close are Our Lady of Grace School, run by the Philippino Dominican Sisters, and the Fr. Tom's Kids program, which helps children whose families have been devastated by HIV/AIDS.
