Click above to hear this week's edition of "Word to Life." Joining me today to discuss the readings for the Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time was my co-host, Fr. Bruno M. Shah, O.P., Msgr. Michael Hull and James Supple. Today on Sirius Radio I spoke with a friend of mine who is friends with Scott Harrison. Scott made his living for years in the big Apple promoting top nightclubs and fashion events. Faced with spiritual bankruptcy, he wanted desperately to revive a lost Christian faith with action and asked himself this question:
"What would the opposite of my life look like?
He signed up for volunteer service aboard a floating hospital with a group called Mercy Ships, a humanitarian organization which offered free medical care in the world's poorest nations.
Watch this video, he has an amazing story:

Scott came to realize that unsafe water and lack of basic sanitation cause 80% of diseases and kill more people every year than all forms of violence, including war. Children are especially vulnerable, as their bodies aren't strong enough to fight diarrhea, dysentery and other illnesses. 90% of the 42,000 deaths that occur every week from unsafe water and unhygienic living conditions are to children under five years old. Many of these diseases are preventable.

It reminded me of something that Benedict XVI said in London a few days ago:
"In recent years it has been encouraging to witness the positive signs of a worldwide growth in solidarity towards the poor. But to turn this solidarity into effective action calls for fresh thinking that will improve life conditions in many important areas, such as food production, clean water, job creation, education, support to families."
Scott is certainly answering this call with fresh ideas and is turning this solidarity into an effective plan of action. We're working with him and plan to drill a new well by Christmas. Join us and learn how you can help.
