When Saint Rose Priory was a novitiate and seminary,
the library was much greater than it is today,
but the Dominican friars still possess books of great value,
some of which are hundreds of years old.
Inside a cover, one might find the autograph of
Father Samuel Thomas Wilson, O.P.,
the first prior provincial of the Order in America.
Today, anyone can buy a paperback of
Saint Francis de Sales' Introduction to the Devout Life,
but we have a Latin edition dated 1678,
only 56 years after the author's death.
There are biblical, liturgical and theological books.
Some are very small with tiny print;
others are large choir books that rested on podiums.
A Bible, in four small but thick volumes,
was printed in 1629,
and that is not the oldest we have.

The Saint Rose Priory Library
is for the use of the Friars Preachers
and is not open to the public.

Father Samuel Thomas Wilson, O.P.

An autograph taken from
the inside cover of
Sacerdos Christianus
by Ludovico Abelly,
a theologian of the Sorbonne,
printed in 1659.
