The Giroux House

The land was bought in 1909 and the house was cornpleted in 1911.
The Monastery of the Angels bought it for $140,000,00 on August 6, 1934
(The Feast of the Transfiguration, and the day Saint Dominic went to heaven).
It consisted of 3 8/1O acres. The house was a 2-story residence of English design
with 20 rooms, a conservatory, a Japanese garden with pond,
fountain and tea house imported from Japan.
In 1949, the Giroux house was converted into a Retreat House.
The first retreat was directed by Father Matthew Osbourn, O.P. on April 1-3, 1949.
Shortly after the death of "Old Mother" on June 1, 1947,
building started for the new monastery.
The permit to build had come on the last day
of the libera procession for her, 8 days after her death.
The community moved into the new building on Christinas Eve 1948.
The Old Retreat House or Giroux House was demolished in October 1973.
